Do you have a builder-grade powder bathroom that lacks character and personality? We definitely do, and it has been a total eyesore since we moved in early last year. I've always had a vision for this space, and it was a no-brainer to partner with Homary to give this space a new life. With a little creativity and some do-it-yourself magic (and lot's of help from my husband & father-in-law!) we easily transformed our lackluster powder bath into a unique oasis that reflects our style. In this blog post, I'll walk you through the step-by-step process of how we revamped our own powder bathroom, from covering the existing orange peel wall texture to replacing the old fixtures and adding some finishing touches. So, let's dive in!
This is the space we are working with (sorry for the quality - had to take a screenshot from a video when we first moved in)
Last February, we painted the walls bright white, upgraded the flooring, and installed floating shelves. These improvements made a big impact, but the space still just didn't feel right.
Then we transformed that space the THIS!!
Say Goodbye to Orange Peel: Skim Coating with Joint Compound
The first step in our transformation journey was to bid farewell to the dreaded orange peel wall texture. We opted for a skim coat using joint compound to achieve a smooth, modern surface. This is a super affordable way to update your walls! You can get a 4gal container for $22, and I only needed one for the entire bathroom. Applying the joint compound evenly across the walls and patiently sanding it down resulted in a fresh canvas ready for the faux lime wash technique I've been dying to try!
ps. how cute is this little jumpsuit I thrifted?!
Unleashing Creativity: DIY Faux Lime Wash
To add character and visual interest to our walls, we decided to experiment with a DIY faux lime wash technique. If you are familiar with lime wash, then you know how expensive this product can be. This technique involves applying layers of paint and water mixture to create a beautifully aged, textured effect. Since I've never worked with lime wash before, I decided to play it safe and try my hand at a little DIY technique. All you need is a masonry brush and 2 different shades of matte paint, one light & one dark. I chose the shades "White Stone" & "Roman Plaster" by BEHR from Home Depot. By playing with different shades and application techniques, we achieved a stunning, one-of-a-kind look that brought depth and charm to our powder bathroom. I have a tutorial for you on my Reels - linked here.
The Devil's in the Details: Black Painted Pipe and Toilet Flush Handle
To tie everything together and create a cohesive look, we paid attention to the little details. We replaced the generic toilet flush handle with a stylish alternative that matched our overall aesthetic. Additionally, we painted the exposed pipe black to add a touch of industrial chic, which perfectly complemented the sink's stone material. These small changes made a big impact on the overall visual appeal of the bathroom.
Out with the Old: Introducing the Stone Freestanding Sink
The outdated pedestal sink from the early 2000s had to go. We replaced it with a magnificent stone freestanding sink by Homary that instantly became the focal point of our bathroom. Its natural elegance and unique design added a touch of luxury and sophistication, turning our powder bathroom into a mini-spa retreat. Here's the BIG REVEAL!!
Transforming a builder-grade powder bathroom into a personalized oasis is an incredibly rewarding DIY project. With a skim coat, a DIY faux lime wash, and a few fixture upgrades, we were able to turn our lackluster space into a unique sanctuary. The smooth walls, visually striking faux lime wash, elegant stone freestanding sink, and thoughtful finishing touches all came together to create a bathroom that reflects our personal style and leaves a lasting impression on anyone who steps inside. Remember, the key to a successful DIY project is patience, creativity, and attention to detail. So, roll up your sleeves, unleash your creativity, and embark on the journey of transforming your own builder-grade powder bathroom into a space that truly feels like home. Happy decorating!
